Our task as Investment Adviser of the Tweedy, Browne Funds is to seek to take advantage of fluctuations in stock prices by purchasing securities at prices below our estimates of intrinsic value.
Every stock has two prices: the price quoted on an exchange and its intrinsic value, or what the business would trade for in an arm’s-length negotiated transaction. Since launching our first mutual fund, the International Value Fund in 1993, Tweedy, Browne has looked for businesses trading at a meaningful discount to that intrinsic value, a margin of safety we believe helps to protect our shareholders’ capital against permanent loss.
That value investing discipline spans four mutual funds: the International Value Fund (1993), Value Fund (1993), Buybacks . Dividends + Value Fund (2007), and International Value Fund II – Currency Unhedged (2009), each diversified across global markets. We do not chase trends or time markets. We look for undervalued businesses, purchased with a margin of safety, in pursuit of long-term capital growth and the preservation of our shareholders’ capital.
Modern day application of a century old “intrinsic value” methodology to the analysis of common stocks around the world.
